The Decision to Stay: Santiago Giménez Turns Down Premier League Club

Mexico striker Santiago Giménez has made a personal decision to remain at Feyenoord after a second bid from Premier League side Nottingham Forest fell through. Despite weeks of negotiations between the two sides, Giménez chose to turn down Forest, opting to stay with the Dutch club.

Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen recently expressed interest in the player as well. However, with only three days left in the summer transfer window, Giménez is expected to stay at Feyenoord for the first few months of the season. The prospect of playing in the Champions League with Feyenoord, who finished second in the Dutch Eredivisie last term, was likely a motivating factor for Giménez.

Giménez joined Feyenoord from Liga MX’s Cruz Azul in July 2022 on a four-year contract and made an immediate impact. In his first season with the club, he secured a spot in the starting XI and scored 23 goals in 45 games across all competitions. His performance was instrumental in Feyenoord winning the league title in his debut season.

Giménez’s success at Feyenoord did not go unnoticed by the national team either. His impressive club tally earned him a call-up to the Mexican national team by then-head coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino. With 30 international caps to his name, Giménez has proven himself on the international stage as well.

The striker continued his fine form into the following season, netting 23 goals in 30 Eredivisie games. His consistency in front of goal has made him a valuable asset for Feyenoord, and his decision to stay at the club reinforces his commitment to further success with the team.

Santiago Giménez’s choice to reject offers from Premier League and Bundesliga clubs in favor of staying at Feyenoord highlights his dedication to the club and his desire to continue playing in European competition. With his impressive performances on both the domestic and international fronts, Giménez is poised to build on his success and further establish himself as a key player for both Feyenoord and the Mexican national team.
